It is not often in a career that you get a chance to be a part of something so fundamentally transformative and revolutionary.
Scott HuttoAccount Manager - South
Meet Scott
After several years developing solutions in his own laboratories, former lab manager Scott Hutto now helps other laboratories across the South to discover and implement the acoustic liquid handling solutions offered by Labcyte.
What is your role at Labcyte?
As the Account Manager for the South, it’s my privilege to introduce the South Central United States to acoustic droplet ejection.
What did you do before joining Labcyte?
Before joining Labcyte, I sold tip-based automated liquid handling solutions for six years. Prior to and after that, I managed many laboratories. My lab experience ranges from DNA sequencing to microarray production, synthetic biology, and even high-throughput screening. In all of these roles, automated liquid handling was imperative to continued success. When the opportunity arose, I jumped at the chance to join the Labcyte team. It is not often in a career that you get a chance to be a part of something so fundamentally transformative and revolutionary!
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is when I talk to people who have never heard of the technology — to see the looks on their faces when I explain how it works and help them picture how it would help them improve their processes. It is fantastic to work for a company where everyone who owns the product is so happy with it, and so excited to share their experiences with the world. It is truly remarkable.
If you could cure any disease, what would it be and why?
In selling Echos, I play an indirect role in developing cures to many diseases. However, if I was to choose one, I would choose cancer. Cancer strikes so many and is so devastating. There is probably not a single person who has not known of, or lost, a loved one to cancer. Given the nature of the disease and its many varied etiologies, to end that suffering is a monumental goal, but one we get closer to every day
What do you do for fun?
In my free time, I will probably be on a beach somewhere, or in a boat, or maybe bouncing around in the mud in my big truck or smoking a brisket. When I’m not near the water relaxing, I enjoy working on vehicles and building or repairing things. My current major projects include my truck and building a game room over my garage. If you ever find yourself in Houston, please come by and join me for a cold one and a game or two of darts or air hockey!
Who is your favorite influencer and why?
Benjamin Franklin is probably my favorite, but people like Thomas Edison and Dr. Arnold Beckman are also influencers I admire. They each looked at the world around them and by using their unique, ingenious perspectives and hard work, created ways to make it better. These people demonstrate that there is virtually no problem that cannot be solved.
Dr. Forrester, my microbiology professor, was a big influence on me. His infectious enthusiasm and kind, helpful demeanor showed me you can love your job and motivate people merely by your own excitement.
Ultimately my dad has been my biggest influence. He showed me through example that everyone has value and deserves respect, and that true happiness is a choice.
What’s your best career advice?
In order to deserve a customer’s trust, you need to develop an attitude of relentless persistence and follow-through. Do what you say you are going to do, and do it quickly. It is also imperative to have a genuine interest in your customer’s problem, and to work with them to develop an appropriate solution.
