Meet Maureen

Maureen Stone covers a lot of ground in her role, both figuratively and literally. While touting Labcyte technology across a huge expanse of the Midwest encompassing 17 states, the Milwaukee-based Senior Account Manager has gotten to know her products in and out. In her nine years on the job, she’s also come to know and love her clients, too.

What is your role at Labcyte?

I am a senior account manager, responsible for sales in the Midwest. I cover the most states and the most acreage of all the account managers, and I probably do the most travel, too. I travel about 50 percent of the time, mostly by air. I also assist other account managers with their projects and make myself available beyond my territory as needed.

What’s the best part of your job?

I’m a people person and I really enjoy the relationships that I’ve been able to develop. I like meeting people, learning about their jobs, and figuring out how I can help them. They are really good people. They are honest and straightforward, and I appreciate that a lot. Plus, people are really excited about the technology and what it can do – that’s what’s fun about selling the equipment.

What did you do before joining Labcyte?

I was a marketing major at the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. I got into selling scientific equipment by answering an ad in the newspaper. Since then, I’ve sold every kind of equipment, from analytical instruments and software, to portable devices and things that sit on the bench.

What do you do for fun?

I have a couple of kids – one in college, and one in high school – so I’ve spent a good deal of the last 20 years focused on them. One thing I’ve become passionate about is the Girl Scouts. I’ve been a leader of my daughter’s troop, and I’ve seen those 11 girls grow together since third grade. They are high school juniors now, and we’re going on a trip to London and Paris next summer. The Girl Scouts is a great organization. It does a lot of research on girls, and incorporates STEM education, career counseling, and outdoor exploration, for both rural and urban youth.

If you could cure any disease, what would it be and why?

I would address mental health issues, especially depression. There’s so much we don’t know about the brain, and there are so many people who suffer.

Who is your favorite influencer?

I have two, and both are people who helped me when I was first starting out. The first is Craig Ranger, who was president at the first company I worked at, Lachat Instruments. He really taught me the mechanics of sales. The second was Joan Newman. She showed me that you can be a successful career person while also being a mom.

What’s your best career advice?
