Meet Mark

Mechanical engineer Mark Rutner is a recent addition to the Labcyte team, joining in December 2016. But the California Polytechnic State University grad is already leading his colleagues - as manager of The Sound Lot, the company softball crew.

What is your role at Labcyte?

I do mechanical design for the R&D group. This involves creating, testing and validating new parts and assemblies -- developing projects from product conception to production. I also get to conduct research into design operation and feasibility, and participate in technical design reviews.

What did you do before joining Labcyte?

I did mechanical design for a small robotics start-up on the central coast.

What’s the best part of the job?

The team. I have some people with tons of knowledge to learn from. As a relatively new engineer, this is the best resource I could ask for.

What do you do in your spare time?

I like building things, designing, and making. I’m also a big fan of sports and physical activity. I play fantasy football with some friends and watch the NFL regularly. I am an avid backpacker and skier, and I love track and field. I coach at the local high school which I used to attend. I also started a company softball team here at Labcyte.

If you could cure any disease, what would it be and why?

Alzheimer’s. I think losing your mind and memories while your body is OK is very sad. My grandpa had it, so I saw first-hand what it does.

What’s your best career advice?

I tell recent graduates to find somewhere small where you will make a difference. While interviewing, pay attention to the team, as they will be a great resource to learn from.
