Kiyo HigashiSr. Financial and Revenue Analyst
Meet Kiyo
Kiyo Higashi, Senior Financial and Revenue Analyst, is a CPA who earned his accounting degree at Brigham Young University and joined Labcyte in February 2017.
What are your responsibilities at Labcyte?
I handle financial planning and analysis, and also revenue accounting. I assist in budgeting, forecasting, and reviewing expenses for any irregularities or errors.
What did you do before this?
Right out of college, I joined public accounting firms as an external auditor. After three years of that, I went to work for a tech company and spent another three years there.
Are there any differences in handling finances for a company in the biotech field?
While most things are similar to any other field, one thing that’s different is that there are a lot of collaborations, such as developing new equipment with pharma companies.
Why did you join Labcyte?
The corporate controller of Labcyte used to be my boss at another company. I liked working under her, and she contacted me when a position opened up here. I was interested in the job and wanted to work with her again.
What’s your favorite part of the job?
It’s very analytical. I get to be part of ad hoc projects to make improvements in the system or processes. As a hands-on person in finance, it’s great to see changes you implement have a positive effect for the company.
How do you see your career developing at Labcyte?
At some point, when I have enough experience, I would like to see myself supervising other people and developing leadership skills.
What’s your best career advice?
Since I came here based on a connection with my former boss, I would say that networking always helps to get a job. Having good connections with the people around you can make a difference in getting a job you want.
If you could cure any disease, what would it be and why?
Cancer. I have seen a lot of people affected, including my friends and extended family. Hopefully one day we can call it a disease of the past. It’s great to know that Labcyte is making an impact in cancer research.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I like to go hiking or play tennis. And with all the beaches in California, it’s great to spend time there.
Who is your favorite influencer and why?
Stephen Covey. I really loved his book, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. He once came to my college and he taught me the importance of grabbing the right opportunities.
