Meet Rabia

Rabia Khan, Applications Research Associate, who has a voracious appetite for learning, earned her bachelor’s degree in biochemistry at the University of the Punjab, Lahore, in Pakistan and joined Labcyte in 2014.

What is your role at Labcyte?

I work mainly with cell culture protocols, cell-based assays and applications. I also support our team of Applications Scientists at the San Jose HQ as well as other sales and marketing members.

What’s the best part of your job?

Working with cells! Cell biology has always been my passion and getting to work with different cell lines and performing experiments is such a treat.

Why did you join Labcyte?

My last job was working with plant-based tissue culture at Monsanto. It was heavily based on cell biology and microbiology. After that I wanted to explore the chemical engineering aspects of life sciences, and that’s how I came to know about Labcyte. Labcyte’s technology was totally new to me. I thought it was really cool, and Labcyte is one of the only ones doing acoustic drop ejection of liquids at a high-throughput scale. Because of this technology Labcyte seems to have substantial recognition and potential to grow in the pharmaceutical industry, personalized medicine, and research and development of life sciences. Being part of a company like this resonates with my personal goals.

How do you see your career developing at Labcyte?

I envision myself as a scientist actively involved in research and development of new applications, being part of publications, collaborating with our customer base and helping to keep the momentum going that Labcyte is building.

If you could cure any disease, what would it be and why?

I’d have to pick two: cancer and depression. Both are silent killers, affecting not just the patient but the people around them. Fortunately, I work for a company that provides instrumentation for research and development of personalized medicine for cancer penitents, and that’s amazing!

What do you do for fun?

Even outside of work, life science is my absolute passion. My Instagram and Facebook feeds are all about marine biology, National Geographic, biophysics, and NASA. For every city my husband and I visit, we make a point to check out the local zoos and aquariums. My best experience by far is the Monterey Bay Aquarium. It is beyond amazing! In this aquarium, there is an exhibit called “Open Sea” with a 90-foot window through which you can see hammerhead sharks, stingrays, sea turtles, sun fish, schools of tuna, and sardines. It is truly mesmerizing! I could sit there for hours.

Who is your favorite influencer?

In my personal life, my constant influencer is my husband. He’s an electrical engineer, on his way to becoming a physicist. Beyond that, I’d say my father who instilled in me the love and appreciation for biology at a very young age, and my high school biology professor Nadeem Iqbal who always challenged and encouraged the scientist within me and advised me to pursue life science as a career.
